CORNELL WOOLRICH (aka William Irish & George Hopley)

(Circa 1903-1968) Woolrich wrote most of his books between 1940 and 1952 under his own name and the psuedonyms of William Irish and George Hopley (his two middle names). His earlier Jazz era novels were published from 1926 through 1932. After a stint in the movie business, Woolrich began writing dark crime novels starting with The Bride Wore Black. There have been as many as 28 short story collections published under his own name and that of William Irish. For an incredible article detailing Woolrich’s life and addressing the myths about it, check out Curtis Evans’ article, “Do People Really Know What They Think They Know About Cornell Woolrich?” (January 10, 2022, Crimereads).
